Is Facebook's Purchase Of An ID Verification Startup A Gesture In Support of Aadhaar?

After denying reports that it wasn't asking people to enter their Aadhaar number in an experimental feature, Facebook has now confirmed its bought over a startup that verifies government-issued identification for third-party businesses. Confirm.io, as the company is called, doesn’t just authenticate IDs but also handles biometrics and facial recognition.

The three-year-old Boston company announced the deal on its website, saying it’s shutting down and being folded into Facebook’s machine
"We are excited to welcome the Confirm team to Facebook,”the social media giant said in a statement to the press. “Their technology and expertise will support our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe.” However, Facebook has yet to indicate just what it plans to use Confirm.io’s expertise for.
Perhaps it’s just the way Facebook plans to crack down on trolls and fake accounts on its platform, possibly verifying by way of government ID. Maybe it’s spurred on by the company’s recent campaign against Russian propaganda that’s crept into the site. Maybe it’s just a way to bolster how users locked out of their accounts can regain access, or to regain control of accounts that have been hacked.
Then again, there’s the possibility this is an attempt to cooperate with India’s Aadhaarcard system. It could be anything from just a subordinate gesture to a verification system for future e-commerce or online service plans. Who knows?
Then again, maybe this is a science fiction novel made real and Facebook is taking the first step in subduing the global populace. Maybe one day we’ll be required to verify ourselves with Facebook-issued IDs in order to receive food rations from our overlords, even as they manipulate the pseudo-democracy according to their whims. There’s really no saying at this point.
